CWNA Practice Exam: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Prep & Study Guide

In an outdoor bridge deployment, the device that acts as the 802.1X Authenticator is the root bridge. The root bridge manages the connections within the wireless network and has the responsibility of facilitating authentication processes for devices attempting to join or access the network. By designating the root bridge as the authenticator, it can directly communicate with the RADIUS server to validate client credentials and ensure that only authorized users can gain access to the network.

This setup is essential in maintaining network security, as it ensures that all connected devices undergo a validation process before being allowed to utilize network resources. In contrast, while the remote bridge and the client device also play critical roles in the connectivity and operation of the network, they do not handle the authentication duties that are specifically assigned to the root bridge. The RADIUS server, while crucial for the authentication process, does not act as an authenticator; instead, it serves as a backend service that provides the necessary authorization and access control in conjunction with the authenticator, which in this case is the root bridge.
